Leon Thomas (born October 4, 1937 – died May 8, 1999) was an American jazz singer, who made his mark in 1969, singing "The Creator Has a Master Plan" with Pharoah Sanders and showing that even avant-garde jazz can become popular under some circumstances. A fairly conventional singer, the most unusual aspect to Thomas was that he often broke out into yodelling in the middle of a vocal, a device since utilized occasionally by James Moody.

Side one is the up-tempo jazz ride, as Thomas and company rip through a host of his own tunes, such as the scatted post-bop of "I Am" and the nearly bar-walking blues of "Come Along. But the side is graced by an absolutely stunning read of Milt Jackson's "Bag's Groove," with Harper leading a five-horn section

Leon Thomas’ second album for Flying Dutchman was a step up from his debut. Instead of the small group setting of Spirits Known and Unknown, The Leon Thomas Album features five horns and a rhythm section augmented by several percussionists. The extravagance was prompted by the good reception received by the first album. Thomas was already a veteran performer by the time Bob Thiele signed him to Flying Dutchman in 1969, having recorded for RCA in 1958 and as the featured vocalist with the Count Basie band in the early to mid-60s
