The Sweet Escape Q&A. What have the artists said about the album?

Lyrics to "The Sweet Escape" song by Gwen Stefani: If I could escape I would But first of all, let me say I must apologize For acting stank and treatin. I want to get away To our sweet escape I want to get away. You melt me down, I'm at my lowest boiling point Come help me out I need to get me out of this joint Come on let's bounce Counting on you to turn me around Instead of clowning around Let's look for some common ground. So, baby Times get a little crazy I've been gettin' a little lazy Waitin' on you to come save me I can see that you're angry By the way that you treat me Hopefully you don't leave me Wanna take you with me.

As such, most of The Sweet Escape's problems arise as a result of her schedule-dicated slog back towards middle ground. With the exception of the spazzy, Akon-produced doo-wop track "The Sweet Escape" and the Keane-penned "Early Winter"- which proves that Stefani still has the ability to elevate an otherwise ordinary rock song to another level- everything else here has the vague whiff of tossed-off album fattener. By now you get the point. One step forward, three steps sideways, one step back, The Sweet Escape continues in Stefani's proud tradition of being caught somewhere between the vanguard and the insipid.

  • Tavan25 2/7/16I love this album! The Sweet Escape is so much better than Gwen's 1st album! This album shows how Gwen has matured and grown since her 1st album! The songs are fun and enjoyable!

  • Gwen Stefani's second solo album "The Sweet Escape" is a just as excellent, possibly even better, effort than her first album "Love.Angel.Music.Baby". All the way through, almost every track hits with instantly memorable, infectious productions and lyrics. The most noticable thing about the album is there's alot of genre hopping going on. One song's funky, the next is a pop gem. One song's a ballad, the next is a throwback dance track. Lots of critics have said the album had strong resemblance to her first album, but I have personally never heard it. "L.A.M.B." was more J-Pop, 80's dance music throwback while "The Sweet Escape" I feel was more modernized to fit into the year 2006. If there's any resemblance, the only track I feel just barely comes the closet to the "L.A.M.B." sound is "Fluorescent", which is a really catchy funky track that twists into a romantic tune in the chorus with the 80's dance music sound that the first album had. The best tracks on the album wind up being the funky, danceable tunes. "Wind It Up" sort of follows in the steps of "Hollaback Girl", containing very catchy marching band-like drums and synths. Then later on, almost the every song in the second half of the album is a standout, starting with "Yummy". At the end of the though song is possibly the most catchiest moment of the album production wise, containing an unexpected closing minute of a wierd, experimental instrumental section containing catchy, infectious car drill synths that progresses into loud trumpet synths. The next standout, which we've already covered, "Fluorescent" then hits. "Breakin' Up" then starts with an unexpected twist for the album, containing Gwen's most hip-hop oriented tune. Next is "Don't Get It Twisted" which extremely catchy, and actually borrows Gwen's trademark No Doubt ska sound a bit in the third verse. While these are the select track, every upbeat song on the album is excellent. As for flaws, some of the ballads, such as "Early Winter", "4 In The Morning" and "U Started It" don't have as much replay value than the other songs, but at the same time, they contain the most memorable and meaningful lyrical content, which Gwen is obviously excellent at. Also, while the entire lyrical part of the album is extremely catchy, it's also possibly a weakness in the album, because some songs wind up sounding a bit too purposeless and silly. This is most notably seen in "Breakin' Up" with it's silly metaphor of bad cell reception and relationships. Nevertheless, who cares to criticize lyrics when you have productions so infectious, funky and danceable? It's hardly a recognizable flaw. Overall though, "The Sweet Escape" is another great album from 2006 and from Gwen Stefani herself. Containing lots of genre hops from catchy dance tunes to beautiful ambient-like ballads, there's no denying it's excellence.RATING- 8 / 10---------------------------------------------Track Picks:Wind It UpYummyFluorescentBreakin' UpDon't Get It Twisted
