SWEET APPLE, the band of rockers featuring J Mascis (Dinosaur J. Heavy Blanket), Tim Parnin (Cobra Verde, Chuck Mosley), John Petkovic (Cobra Verde, Death Of Samantha, Guided By Voices) and Dave Sweetapple (Witch, Eerie) once again collaborated across several state lines to create their new album, Sing The Night In Sorrow. The record explores themes such as longing and escape, darkness consumed by endless daylight, love amid lovelessness, faulty memory, alienation and distance, all set to a musical palette that mixes atmosphere with impact. Three years in the making, Sing The Night In Sorrow rolls out insurgent guitars, glitter-stomp, and orchestrated pop, at once timeless and contemporary.

Given SWEET APPLE's geographical reach – its four members live in Massachusetts, Vermont and Ohio – it's no surprise that the band's inner circle has expanded outwards with this LP. Guest musicians on Sing The Night In Sorrow include Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Queens Of The Stone Age), Robert Pollard (Guided By Voices), Rachel Haden (Haden Triplets) and Doug Gillard (Guided By Voices, Nada Surf).

The third album from the indie rock supergroup, 2017's Sing the Night in Sorrow, sounds significantly less decade-specific than their previous work, though their smart but high-impact mix of rock guitar and pop melodies still provides the backbone for these ten songs. At its best, Sing the Night in Sorrow recalls singer/guitarist John Petkovic's work with unsung '80s heroes Death of Samantha, only with bigger guitars and grander production.

  • 3rd album from all-star U.S. band featuring members from Dinosaur Jr., Cobra Verde, Witch, Guided By Voices, Heavy Blanket, Eerie, Death Of Samantha. Overall, the band rocks harder here than they did on 2014’s brilliant album “The Golden Age Of Glitter”; moving through hard-edged garagey rock ‘n’ roll, some boot-stomping glam-rock chords and hum-along power pop riffs. The songs have a feel of immediacy; they generate the kind of excitement you feel when you see a really talented group playing rock ‘n’ roll for fun. Guest contributors include Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Queens Of The Stone Age), Robert Pollard & Doug Gillard (Guided By Voices, Nada Surf). “Sing the Night In Sorrow” is a bit of a sleeper. It gets better with each listen, as the songs start to stick in your head—and you realize you want them to stay there. It’s pure & prime, straightforward power pop rock ‘n’ roll done to perfection. Recommended.
