The Tahitian Islands include Oparo, also known as Rapa, where some 330 inhabitants dwell; 126 of the villagers comprise this choir. The unusual sonorities of all those singers, pure intonation not so much being the prerequisite as is the spirit, reflects the diversity of their distinct Polynesian culture.

  • it's not the humidity, the vocal technique where the speeds of the voices slur and slow down appreciably is apparently unique to this island, as it is featured in the himene from the same island on "Spirit of Polynesia", David Fanshawe's collection of field recordings, from years earlier. It sometimes seems that the reportoire here is a little "cleaned up" of the usual occasional grunts and groans maybe to appeal to a "new age" audience but the music is still great
