Whether any band can actually live up to such a title is questionable, but At Manchester's Free Trade Hall, England 1971 does qualify as a fine recording of a vivacious live show. This rather large band (nine players), including trumpeters Yank Lawson and Billy Butterfield, and pianist Ralph Sutton, turns back the clock to a jazz form - Dixieland - that hadn't been "in" since the 1910s.

The World's Greatest Jazz Band was an all-star jazz ensemble active from 1968 to 1978.

Recorded in concert on December 15, 1971 in Manchester, England.

Popular albums by this artist. Plays George Gershwin. In Concert at Carnegie Hall, Vol. 2. Way Out West. Dick Gibson founded the group at his sixth Jazz Party, an annual event. The group performed mostly Dixieland jazz and recorded extensively. It was co-led by Yank Lawson and Bob Haggart, and did early jazz standards alongside contemporaneous pop songs done in a Dixieland style. Though the group disbanded in 1978, the name was revived several times by Lawson and Haggart for limited engagements. Live at Roosevelt Grill (1970). At Manchester's Free Trade Hall (1971). Century Plaza (1972). Hark the Herald Angels Swing (1972). At Massey Hall (1972). Plays Duke Ellington (1973). Good News (with Teresa Brewer) (1974).

The Music of King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band as Played by the Bob Wilber Jazz Repertory Ensemble - Bob Wilber, Chris Flory, Chuck Riggs, Glenn Zottola, Mark Shane, Tom Artin.
