The music of Swiss composer Frank Martin is sadly underexposed and underperformed in the United States. Although he began his compositional output in the 1930s, then the in-vogue compositional technique centered on Schoenberg 's twelve-tone system, Martin abandoned the strict serialist approach and composed primarily melodic works throughout his career. Such is the case with this album, primarily featuring mature, seasoned compositions from later in his lifespan

Quirine Viersen joins the chamber orchestra as soloist in a deeply engaged interpretation of these wonderfully compelling works. With this title Quirine Viersen released her 4th CD on Etcetera. Quirine Viersen is one of the foremost musical personalities of her generation. Her intense, powerful and virtuoso playing has thoroughly convinced her colleagues, the press and the public of her great musical talent and strength. This season she will be performing with Pieter Wispelwey, at the Concertgebouw . Concerto for Cello and Orchestra. 1. Lento-allegro moderato-lento. artists: ' Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra' composers: 'Frank Martin (1890-1974)'.

Amongst other concerts this season, Quirine Viersen will give multiple performances of the Barber Cello Concerto with the Niederrheinische Sinfoniker under Diego Martin-Etxebarria. For the international Cello Biennial Amsterdam 2018, she looks forward to revisiting Korngold’s Cello Concerto, and giving the world premiere of Glacier, a solo piece written for her by JacobTV. 2019 will see the collaboration with both the Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra/Lucas Macias Navarro and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra for the cello arrangement of Mozart’s Flute Concerto.

Martin wrote six Ballades for solo instruments plus orchestra. The Ballade for cello is a substantial work which often presages the moods of the concerto. If anything, it is an even more personal utterance and Quirine Viersen is again equal to its challenges. The Passacaille for strings was originally written for organ in 1944. Martin made two arrangements – the version performed here for strings and one for full orchestra.
