The Yellow Shark is an album of orchestral music by American musician Frank Zappa. Released in November 1993, it was the last Zappa album to appear in his lifetime, almost exactly a month before he died of the cancer from which he had suffered for several years. It features live recordings from the Ensemble Modern's 1992 performances of Zappa's compositions

During his last years, Frank Zappa concentrated on his "serious music," trying to impose himself as a composer and relegating the rock personality to the closet. His last two completed projects topped everything he had done before in this particular field. The Yellow Shark, an album of orchestral music, was released only a few weeks before he succumbed to cancer (the computer music/sound collage album Civilization Phaze III was released a few months later)

Released November 2, 1993. The Yellow Shark Tracklist. 2. Dog Breath Variations Lyrics. 3. Uncle Meat Lyrics. 4. Outrage At Valdez Lyrics.

The Yellow Shark is an album of orchestral music by Frank Zappa. It features live recordings from the Ensemble Modern's 1992 performances of Zappa's compositions.

The Yellow Shark, the title at least, was based on a piece of artwork hanging on Zappa's wall by Los Angeles artist Mark Beam, who carved a marlin out of a yellow surfboard and had it sent to the artist's house as a present. It caught the eye of Andreas Mölich-Zebhauser, manager of the Frankfurt, Germany-based 18-piece orchestra Ensemble Modern, who happened to be at Zappa's home with the group's conductor, Peter Rundel, talking to Frank about the music the Ensemble commissioned from Frank for a series of concerts in Sept. The initial sessions for Shark came about when the Ensemble flew out to Los Angeles in the summer of 1991 and spent two weeks in rehearsals with Zappa at his Joe's Garage home studio.

The Yellow Shark is such a great album. It's breathtaking at times, and doesn't get all tense, scary, and nervous like the London Symphony Orchestra album does (which is a totally different beast of an album anyway). Frank comes out and tells the audience to "get serious, folks", even though he says to throw any panties off to the side of the stage.

  • This is very fine recording. But the Allmusic review keeps referring to this as Zappa's "serious music." It should be noted that even Zappa deemed all his music "serious." This is a different genre certainly. In the modern orchestral variety. That's the difference between this and some of his more popular music.

  • I am not an uncritical Zappa fan. I found his work frustrating and/or disappointing as often as I found it exciting and inspiring. But this--this is the most essential item (IMHO, of course) in Zappa's discography, with the possible exception of "Hot Rats." Never before was any of his "serious music" so well played and recorded. And the selection of music is just about perfect. About the only thing the serious Zappa fan might miss here is Zappa's guitar playing.
