Turnage: Orchestral Works Volume 3. About the Album – LPO. British composer Mark-Anthony Turnage is widely admired for his distinctive blending of jazz and contemporary classical traditions, high energy and elegiac lyricism. Mark-Anthony Turnage, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Markus Stenz, Marin Alsop, Vladimir Jurowski.

Turnage was the London Philharmonic Orchestras Composer in Residence from 200510, during which time the Orchestra released two highly acclaimed CDs of his orchestral music. This is the third and final volume of Turnages music to be released on the LPO Label. It features five works recorded for the first time, including the world première peformance of his violin concerto Mambo, Blues and Tarantella with soloist Christian Tetzlaff. The CD also features performances by soloists Lawrence Power (viola) and Michael Collins (clarinet). Mark-Anthony Turnage was the London Philharmonic Orchestra's composer in residence for five years, and this is the third volume of his works written for the ensemble. The recordings are all take n from live performances, which gives them an added sense of freshness and energy. On Opened Ground" is kind of a disjointed jazz-flavored concerto for viola.

Composer Mark-Anthony Turnage talks to Sean about the world premiere this month of his new piece 'Remembering', which was written as a tribute after a young friend's death. Conductor Ian Page, baritone Ashley Riches, and soprano Gemma Summerfield from Classical Opera discuss their exploration of Mozart's life, works, and influences which takes place at London's Wigmore Hall. The LPO label’s third disc of Mark-Anthony Turnage (the orchestra’s Composer in Residence from 2005 to 2010) may have arrived some while after its predecessors (11/05, 4/08) but it was worth the wait. Dominating the sequence are three concertos which in themselves offer a decent overview of the composer’s evolution over this past decade. Not least because of its solo instrument’s jazz connotations, Riffs and Refrains (2003) is most redolent of his earlier music, its two movements complementing each other as they move from brusquely syncopated ‘breaks’ to undulating bluesy paragraphs.
