War Eternal is the ninth studio album by Swedish melodic death metal band Arch Enemy, which was released on 9 June 2014 by Century Media. It is the first Arch Enemy album in 15 years since Burning Bridges to feature a new line-up; Alissa White-Gluz took over on vocals after former long-time vocalist Angela Gossow stepped down from vocal duties to be the band's business manager. Additionally, ex-Arsis guitarist Nick Cordle replaced Christopher Amott in 2012.

Friend or foe? There's no way to know In the battlefield of life It's kill or be killed So many times It's a matter of degrees From being up on your luck To down on your knees. It's a hellish inferno This is war eternal

This was the first Arch Enemy album to feature former The Agonist vocalist Alissa White-Gluz. Lyrically, the album spends a lot of time dealing with personal struggle, as well as struggling against forces outside of yourself. This concept is reinforced in the album artwork

  • Problems in Arch Enemy’s line-up arose following the amicable separation among Angela Gossow and Michael Amott, and even his brother Christopher left the line-up. Since the band had to keep the “handsome female singer” phenomenon, they recruited the Arch Enemy fan, hair-coloured Alissa White-Gluz, who had been coincidentally fired by The Agonist the same year. The other new member is session guitarist Nick Cordle (Insomnium, Sanctuary, This Means You). Both the new members gave their first performance in the band’s 2014 album War Eternal, which confirmed their well-suited abilities for the band. Unfortunately, not all the pieces fit the puzzle. While both are convincing and strong in their role (White-Gluz’s vocals, in particular, sound much more masculine than Gossow’s, despite being hardly considerable as “death/black vocals”), both didn’t really contribute to the songwriting, which was still almost entirely relegated to Amott (the privileges of being a founding member). And so the album follows predictable mis-matched melodic/Neoclassical guitar sections more suited to Stratovarius and Yngwie Malmsteen than themselves with generic and predictable Thrash/Metalcore palm-muted mosh sections… in every single song of the album. Probably knowing that the songwriting is mostly slow and anything but Death Metal, someone had the good idea of putting blast-beats on “Never Forgive, Never Forget” (something the band didn’t deliver since Stigmata). With all these considerations, the album still fail to impress. The songwriting is full of holes and unnecessary features, like short guitar solos designed to arouse guitar enthusiasts and sporadic keyboard appearances. The credits-instrumental “Not Long for This World” seems to be the only highlight. Overall, this is one of the band’s most uninspired efforts, and considering that their past discography isn’t exceptional, it’s a problem for newcomers.Highlights: “Never Forgive, Never Forget”, “Not Long for This World”.
