Hard to believe, but A Night In November-Live in New Orleans is the first drums, saxophone duet recording by legendary New Orleans free jazz saxophonist and educator Kidd Jordan. He's accompanied by a true kindred spirit, Hamid Drake. Though both have made names for themselves in the rarefied world of free improvisation, neither are shy about their roots in more traditional forms of jazz, blues, soul, and R&B. Jordan, now almost 80 years old, is a remarkable figure whose music has only been properly documented since the late 1990s.

New York City's Vision Festival honors New Orleans saxophonist Kidd Jordan Wednesday night. He still remains unknown outside avant-garde jazz circles, but Jordan says that doesn't matter. We used to play for balls here in New Orleans, and they'd say, 'Give him some chicken, put some chicken in his mouth, stop him!' I would be downstairs practicing, and people would say, 'Man, go get him something, stop him from practicing. And they'd give me one solo a night - that's all I needed. To support himself, Jordan played in pit bands for shows on tour and backed up musicians such as Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin. Jordan never minded playing conventional music, as long as he respected the musician.

Recorded in New Orleans on the late night of Sept. 25, 2005, mere weeks after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city, People of the Ninth sonically transposes the tumultuous emotions experienced by Jordan as he braved the destruction with his family, watching others become horrifically neglected and denied. Fasteau taps deeply into this well of emotion and mania, at times mimicking underwater sounds with the Aquasonic, creating the illusion of entrapment and drowning. Jordan’s horn cries for the unfortunate and angrily admonishes the uncaring.
