The Grateful Dead's Twilight Zone soundtrack is for Deadheads only, and only some of them. Almost totally forgotten - or perhaps never even known, even among devotees - this disc captures the Dead's work on CBS' 1985 reboot of Rod Serling's Twilight Zone. This, in some ways, is as it should be: besides its obscure provenance, the decidedly independent Silva Screen Records, it was recorded in the mid-'80s, a period of an excessive creative nadir in the Dead's career. Though ultimately disappointing, the Dead's Twilight Zone work is still a pretty delightful.

The Twilight Zone (1985) is the first of two revivals of Rod Serling 's acclaimed 1959–64 television series of the same name. It ran for three seasons on CBS before producing a final season for syndication. The Twilight Zone: Season 1 (1985 - 1989)". com/shows/the twilight zone 1985.

Yes, Twilight Zone music is supposed to sound weird and conjure the world of demons or disjunct thinking in a person's mind. Nun the Less, to me, a one who laughs at the macabre, this music is very soothing to me. I know, I know, I'm weird.

The Twilight Zone debuted the night of September 27, 1985 to a generally warm reception: it would win its Friday-night time slot in four of its first five weeks. Episodes featured adaptations of stories by Harlan Ellison (whose "Shatterday" launched the new series), Greg Bear, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, Robert McCammon, and Stephen King. A new batch of scripts was supplemented with remakes of classic Twilight Zone episodes like "Dead Man’s Shoes", "Shadow Play", and "Night of the Meek". While continuing to perform as a member of the Grateful Dead, in 1975 and 1976 Weir played in the Bay Area band Kingfish with friends Matt Kelly and he later contributed to Kellys 1987 album A Wing and a Prayer, on Relix Records. In 1978 he fronted the Bob Weir Band with Brent Mydland, in 1980 he formed another side band, Bobby and the Midnites.

How many Deadheads remember that keyboardist and Grateful Dead compatriot Merl Saunders was music director of the 1985-86 season of The Twilight Zone? An entertaining artifact from a bygone era, this disc is filled with music composed, arranged, and performed by the Grateful Dead and Saunders. While Saunders tended toward jazz-lite indulgences and several compositions are under two minutes long, there are a few extended cuts that qualify as authentic Dead performances.
