Tempo giusto alla fine. Martyn Brabbins, Howard Shelley, BBC National Orchestra of Wales. 2. Allegro molto ed impetuoso - Più animato - Molto cantabile. Concerto No. 3, Op. 57 'Concerto estivo', for piano and orchestra.

A third one was attempted in 1953, but was withdrawn. It was successful, winning a prize and was given three performances within two years of its premiere in 1965. This three-movement, 35-minute work is emotionally dark, but very compelling. The highlight is the brilliantly orchestrated, hysterically manic scherzo that showcases the crack ensemble of BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Chandos’ state of the.

Howard Shelley, piano; BBC National Orchestra of Wales/Martyn Brabbins, cond. STANFORD: Clarinet Concerto, Op. 80. FINZI: Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra. The label continues their commendable series of orchestral music of Kenneth Leighton with this major issue containing two large-scale works, Symphony No. 1, and Piano Concerto No. 3. Those who know this composer primarily from his choral and vocal music will be surprised by the sense of doom and despair heard in Symphony No. 1, which had its premiere in 1965. There are three movements, the second a sardonic scherzo, a welcome if foreboding respite from the dark intensity of the outer sections.

Concerto No. 57 'Concerto estivo' (1969) for Piano and Orchestra I Introduction and allegro. Lento maestoso - Con moto, dolce e ritmico - II Pastoral. Adagio, delicato e lontano - Intenso - Molto adagio. Martyn Brabbins is one of Britain's leading and most versatile conducting talents. He has been Associate Principal Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Principal Conductor of Sinfonia 21 since 1994. He is also Conducting Consultant at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Principal Conductor of the Huddersfield Choral Society and has been the Philharmonia Orchestra's Music of Today Series Conductor since autumn 1999.

Howard Shelley (piano). BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Martyn Brabbins. This latest volume includes the very successful First Symphony, completed in 1964, which won first prize in the 1965 City of Trieste international competition for a new symphonic work. It received its British premiere in October 1967 with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Charles Groves. In three movements, it is the only Leighton symphony to employ purely orchestral forces.

Piano Concerto "Concerto estivo", Op. 57 (1969). Howard Shelley, piano BBC National Orchestra of Wales/Martyn Brabbins Chandos CHAN10608 73:03. Summary for the Busy Executive: "I like a man whut takes his time" – Mae West. Until recently, the British seemed unable to keep more than one living British composer in their heads at a time, although Americans have had the same trouble. Both the symphony and the concerto operate at the architectural level of a Robert Simpson – major statements based on a radical brevity of structural components. Obviously, Leighton mastered variation technique, but he impresses even more as a shaper of symphonic narrative. Leighton made two abortive tries at his first symphony before he found his way, since took the symphony as a form very seriously indeed. His three symphonies lie roughly ten years apart from one another.
