Released August 2, 2011. Last Words: The Final Recordings Tracklist. 1. Ash Gray Sunday Lyrics.

Last Words: The Final Recordings is an album by the American band the Screaming Trees. The album itself was recorded two years after their album Dust. Shortly after Dust was released, Epic Records decided to drop the band. However, in the years of 1998 and 1999, the band recorded the album in Pearl Jam's guitarist Stone Gossard's studio.

Despite Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan's eventual ascendance to über-hip status as a fire-breathing vocal foil for Isobel Campbell and Josh Homme, the Trees remain the great could-have-beens of the ‘90s Northwestern grunge scene. Of course, part of that may have to do with the fact that they were never really a grunge band to begin with. After all, they preceded grunge by a good few years, releasing their first record on SST - a (gasp) California label - and they always seemed more interested in getting in touch with their inner Nuggets garage-psych warriors than recycling Black.

After a touch of success, Screaming Trees found themselves without a label, and Last Words sat in limbo for 12 years until drummer Barrett Martin finally released it himself. The recordings were made at Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard’s studio, circa ‘98-‘99, and they’re top-notch. Back to their raw beginnings, but with singer Mark Lanegan’s growl ever more authoritative, The Final Recordings stands among the group’s finest releases.

This collection of previously unreleased late-90s Screaming Trees recordings offers an epitaph for a band that died of natural causes. Ironically, Last Words is actually rendered more inessential by its best quality. In terms of sheer tone, Lanegan once again sounds fantastic. But you already knew that. Whether we're talking about his solo albums, collaborations with Isobel Campbell and Greg Dulli, or his more high-profile work with Queens of the Stone Age, there's no shortage of him functioning as rock's equivalent of Scarface (the rapper, not Al Pacino), relied on as a character actor specializing in a certain kind of brooding, wizened masculinity
