Brahms: 4 Symphonies; Haydn Variations; Overtures; Double Concerto; Libeslieder-Walzer. That is highly desirable, but it doesn't contain the two overtures, the Double Concerto, the Liebeslieder Waltzes, or any of the other pieces that the symphonies are paired with here; that's a special pity in the case of the Tragic Overture, which Toscanini treats almost as a lost symphonic movement, relentless in it tempos and expansive in its detail.

Brahms Symphonies 1-4, Haydn Variations, Alto Rhapsody, Academic Festival & Tragic Overtures - Otto Klemperer, Christa Ludwig Philharmonia Orchestra Audio CD. Brahms. Sample this album Artist - Artist (Sample). 1. 30. Variations on a Theme by Haydn, O. 6a 'St Antoni Chorale' (1992 - Remaster): Thema: Chorale St. Antoni (Andante). The three discs in the set include not only the four symphonies but the Haydn Variations, the Alto Rhapsody (with Christa Ludwig), and the Academic and Tragic Overtures. Klemperer's way with the First Symphony is as granitelike as always, yet the music flows almost unconsciously from his direction. The famous march tune in the Finale is, of course, as prominent as ever and crowns the work for the heroic tones that precede it; but even the prior three movements show the power and conviction of both Brahms and Klemperer.

The wonderfully lithe Haydn Variations mirror Toscanini's classic 1936 New York Philharmonic version in their fusion of precision and poetry. And the Tragic Overture's brooding resonance belies the conductor's apparent distraction: he had started to conduct what he thought was the First Symphony, only to be unnerved by the Tragic Overture's sharp opening chords. Alan Sanders' notes provide an informative context for the performances in hand.
