Album · 2017 · 16 Songs. Sir Andrew Davis and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra find new shades in Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Ninth Symphony. The orchestra bites hard into the composer’s dense polyphony, creating spellbinding swells of brass, strings, and even saxophones. The symphony’s tranquil final movement takes on its own gripping temporality in this fine reading. Vaughan Williams: Job & Symphony No. 9 Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.

A Vision of Satan Ralph Vaughan Williams; Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra; Sir Andrew Davis. 8. Scene 7. Elihu's Dance of Youth and Beauty Ralph Vaughan Williams; Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra; Sir Andrew Davis. Davis’s path through Job is totally lucid and his handling of the great climaxes is impressive, with the organ (recorded in Bergen Cathedral) weighing in emphatically for the appearance of Satan. in both works, the orchestra is exemplary. The projected complete cycle of Vaughan Williams’s symphonies started by the late Richard Hickox has left a precious heritage in the discography of the composer.

Dance of Plague, Pestilence, Famine and Battle 3:54 Scene 5: Dance of the Messengers 4:43 Scene 6: Dance of Job's Comforters.

Andrew Davis takes his Bergen Philharmonic on a voyage of discovery through the late works of Vaughan Williams. The "Masque for Dancing", based on the old testament story of Job, takes on monumental proportions in the acoustic space of Bergen cathedral, especially when the organ announces Satan's entrance. Satan's curiously deformed saxophone voice has no chance against the higher powers. In the Ninth Symphony, too, is given a surprising color palate by the use of the saxophone and other unconventional instruments.
