Derek Jarman's final film was consisted entirely of a blue screen with the flickering shadow of his person appearing and disappearing on its surface. His voice and a score composed by Simon Fisher-Turner of sound effects, performed music, and rhythmic appliances was its soundtrack. The film met with extreme reactions because of its somewhat blasphemous concept. But it also met with great empathy: Jarman made his film all but blind.

Michael Derek Elworthy Jarman (31 January 1942 – 19 February 1994) was an English film director, stage designer, diarist, artist, gardener, and author. Jarman was born at the Royal Victoria Nursing Home in Northwood, Middlesex, England. the son of Elizabeth Evelyn (née Puttock) and Lancelot Elworthy Jarman. His father was a military officer, born in New Zealand. He boarded at Canford School in Dorset, and from 1960 studied at King's College London.

Blue" a film by Derek Jarman Blue: Derek Jarman, Simon Fisher Turner, Marvin Black, David Lewis, James Mackay. and All True Lovers". Track titles are not given in the booklet. Music recorded at Brian Eno's Wilderness Studio CD mastered by Nimbus. Published by Mute Song except Track.

As visionary filmmaker Derek Jarman was slowly dying of AIDS, in a cruel irony he was also going blind. Yet this spurred him to make a film that was simply a screen of shimmering blue, accompanied by a narrative drawn from his diaries & embellished with ambient sounds. This is the soundtrack of that film, essentially a spoken word piece in which he ruminates on mortality, passion, fear, homophobia, victims of world horrors, his childhood memories, his day-to-day struggles - all bound together by an ongoing contemplation of the color blue & its many meanings. The result is a monologue.

Directed by Derek Jarman. With Derek Jarman, Tilda Swinton, John Quentin, Nigel Terry. Against a plain, unchanging blue screen, a densely interwoven soundtrack of voices, sound effects and music attempt to convey a portrait of Derek Jarman's experiences with AIDS, both literally and allegorically, together with an exploration of the meanings associated with the colour blue. Against a plain, unchanging blue screen, a densely interwoven soundtrack of voices, sound effects and music attempt to convey a portrait of Derek Jarman's experiences with AIDS, both. The film is Jarman’s last feature and was completed only a few months before he died. Consequently, Blue forms a direct counterpart to the late painting Ataxia - Aids is Fun 1993 in its evocation of Jarman’s final illness, albeit from a very different standpoint.

Blue is the twelfth and final feature film by director Derek Jarman, released four months before his death from AIDS-related complications. Such complications had already rendered him partially blind at the time of the film's release, only being able to see in shades of blue.
